Chudleigh April 2019

Image
A last minute Easter getaway took us to  Holmans Wood  Park in Chudleigh, Devon  We had a lovely pitch with plenty of room, however some of the other pitches were quite small and quite close together.    This  is a small, well established site which has recently been taken over by the Halfryn Group, who appear to be installing lots of expensive holiday lodges on what was once the lower camping field. Facilities were clean but very dated - the hairdryer was broken and the showers looked like they had not been touched since the 1980s.   If you are looking for a site where there is literally nothing then it is perfect.  You get used to the hum of the A38 close by and it is full of wildlife. There was a pub about 10 minutes walk away - The Highwaymans Haunt which was great for the evenings .  We have recently learnt that this has been shut and the landlord jailed.  Other than a service station there is now nothing close enough to ...

Heligan St Ewe February 2019

Image
Although we only had a one night stopover in the stunning  H eligan   campsite in February, it is definitely one which we will return to. Perched high up yet only two miles from the coast, the site provides stunning views of the South Cornish Coast. A beautiful February sunset The site is well spaced and level with high standard facilities.  Very peaceful (in February) with dog walks, play area and shop.  Well placed for the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Mevagissy and St Austell. You can pick your pitch, subject to availability, if you book online.

Lyme Regis March 2019

Image
During our return from a family party in Brighton we visited Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast for the day.  So refreshing that they cater for motorhomes in their   Charmouth Road  car park.  Just £1 per hour and free 6 pm to 8 am.  No overnight camping but even so a town that is astute to its tourist base. Bluebell in a welcoming properly sized bay The Town Lyme Regis itself is beautiful and, having been allocated a special spot we made the most of our time and spent money locally.  A 10 minute stroll down the footpath leading from the car park will tighten your calves and reward you with an amazing view of the Jurassic Coast. The view from the footpath leading from the car park. Of course once there we indulged in some fossil hunting whilst marvelling at the marvellous March weather that quite frankly could have been August. The fossils are everywhere in the rocks we had great fun finding them.  Truly an amazing place ...

Our Favourite CL

Image
We prefer CLs or certified locations, to the larger sites.  One of our personal favourites is  Dunree  at Delabole on the North Cornish Coast. You will receive a really warm welcome from the owners who own a Moho themselves and who have worked really hard to make this a lovely site.   We usually opt for the hard standing pitch but grass pitches are also available.  As a CL only permits up to five vehicles at any one time this is a roomy CL. EHU, toilet, shower and waste disposal available.  Stunning views of the local countryside with early morning sheep alarm call from the neighbouring field. We usually go to the  Poldark Inn  for dinner.  If you are looking for Haute de cuisine then stop reading now.  If you are happy with basic pub grub (usually with chips) stay with me.  The Inn offers standard pub fare at reasonable prices.  You could drive (warning single track road) but we walk.  It takes about 20 minut...

Motorhome Stopover Fraddon March 2019

Image
One of our first pub stopovers.  We stayed at the  Blue Anchor  at Fraddon. Essentially you park up overnight for free - although it is considered polite to eat or at least have a drink at the pub. Anyhow we were given a warm welcome and told we could park either hard standing or on grass area at back.  Being early March and wet, and with storm Freya beginning to make her presence known, we did not want to chance our arm on the grass so plumped for the harder surface. We did need to level but other than that all ok. A pub stopover is just that, a place to park up over night.  No EHU or other site amenities,  in fact wild camping for the very lazy, with the satisfaction of supporting local business with no washing up! Beautiful pub with a good menu and good selection of gins.  Even better was the bonus of 20 staggering steps and you were in your bed.   We had a wonderfully quiet night, sleeping right through storm Freya, althoug...

Henry’s Campsite the Lizard Cornwall May 2018

Image
If you love quirky you will love love love  Henry’s  Campsite.  The most southerly site in the UK it is boho bliss. Relaxed, chilled with free range animals, fire pits and a stunning sea view.  If you like the ordered neatness of a club site, or are not so confident manoeuvring your home into non uniform pitches then best avoid.   But if like us you just want to chill, star watch and pretend the world does not exist outside the bubble you will love it.  A complete mix of tents, campers and everything in between all jumbled up into one happy family. Lizard  Village a mere 2 minutes walk with shops, pubs and restaurants.   You can hire a bbq or brazier, there is also a shop which sells everything you could possibly need.    Not huge amounts of showers or loos but atmosphere brilliant.  We found it quite noisy at night as our neighbours sat out until 3 am talking round their brazier - with noise levels rising as cider suppl...

Chedder 5th May 2019

Image
Chedder  We managed a one night stopover at   Chedder .  A little bit pricy but sometimes when you are staying for a short time you want to know what you can expect. Anyway a cracking site, small by club standards but it is all about the location, location, location. This site is perfectly located for walking, yes walking to both  Chedder Town and Chedder Gorge -  no more than 5 minutes gentle, mostly completely off road,  stroll and you find yourself in the town.  For the more ambitious of you a further 10 minutes gentle exertion  will take you to the heart of Chedder Gorge itself.   Whilst we love our Moho there is often the angst and frantic internet searching to find out whether we can park nearby an attraction, so having the freedom to walk was perfect. We had a fabulous afternoon wandering around the Gorge, looking at endless tourist shops,  sampling the “only cheese claimed to be made in Chedder itself” ...

Bluebell

Image
A way in which we can record our travels and adventures in Bluebell, our beautiful motor home. We decided not to wait until we retire but to live the moment and see as much as we can.
